Cooperation with Europeana

General description:

This short course is addressed to people who want to prepare their existing repository for cooperation with Europeana and start such cooperation as Europeana content providers.

During this course you will learn more about the idea behind Europeana and about its functionality. The concept of metadata aggregation and the OAI-PMH protocol, which are technical foundations of Europeana, will be also described. In the following topics you will find a detailed explanation of the procedure which has to be fulfilled in order to pass resources to Europeana, including the preparation of metadata mapping from metadata schema used in your repository to Europeana Semantic Elements schema.

Requirements:

It is assumed that the participants of this course have knowledge necessary to create and maintain a digital library. These includes some technical and information management skills.

Tema 1

Overview of Europeana

In this topic you will learn more about Europeana, about its goals, its role in the promotion of European cultural heritage and about its functionality.

The prototype of Europeana is available on-line since November 2008. At the moment this portal gives access to several million of objects coming from cultural institutions located in all member states. The first lesson describes goals and the development process of Europeana. The second lesson presents the most significant Europeana functions, and the last part of this topic shows why it's worth to join Europeana and what will be the role of this portal in the future.

Tema 2

Technical aspects of Europeana

This topic covers basic concepts necessary to understand goals of metadata aggregation and mechanisms behind it. In this topic you will learn how OAI-PMH works and why it is so widely used.

In first lesson you will learn what is metadata aggregation, what benefits it brings to repository managers, services providers and end-users.

The following lesson presents Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE) which is a metadata schema developed for Europeana. The last lesson describes in more details issues related with mapping and normalization of metadata to suit the Europeana requirements in this subject.

In the end of the topic there are some additional materials showing how metadata aggregation can be implemented using Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). There is also a short lesson dedicated to Europeana Data Model.
