Difference between to infitive and gerund

Dear students,

ANNOUNCEMENT: For those that haven't handed in the essay with biography of famous people that changed career, page 68, 4. PLease send it to my email: ivatarle@gmail.com, by 16th of December. If you fail to do so, you will get a negative grade.

I sent you excercises to complete regarding the difference between the two verb forms.

Here is a simple explanation, some verbs use to infinitive after them, some use gerund. The simple difference between the two is that infinitive is a neutral verb form (to play) and gerund is a verb noun, used when we want to put the focus on activities.

To infinitive goes after the following verbs:

afford, agree, ask, choose, claim, come, dare, decide, refuse, prove, offer, hope, have, get, fail, expect......to start

He agreed to write a letter to his father.

Gerund goes after the following verbs

admit, advise, avoide, vondess, delay, deny, detest, dislike, enjoy, postpone, permit, resist, save, suggest....

He admitted lying.

Please complete the handout (printani materijal) and if you haven't yet complete on page 71. exercise no 4 and 5 and check the grammar spot in the blue.

Enjoy the holidays!!

Merry Christmas!!
